History

The city was settled by a gentleman named Isaiah L. Scammon in 1852. The county seat was moved to “the place of I. L. Scammon” but his wife wanted the area to bear the name Mount Zion. Samuel James offered the current name, as he thought the word sound more pleasant and carried the same meaning. A post office was established in the city under the current name.
